The Butterfly Buddies is a pen pal program that aims to help children with disabilites foster meaningful friendships and improve their communication skills.
We Build Friendships
This pen pal program pairs a child with disabilities with a typical child. The friendship that is built through writing letters and hearing stories provides a learning opportunity for both children involved. Children with disabilities will be able to improve their communication skills and better express themselves by writing to someone that we hope they will come to consider a close friend. For our volunteers, this program allows them to learn about disabilities with the hope of decreasing the stigma that surrounds disability throughout the world. Stigma can only be decreased through awareness, and by communicating with their buddies, volunteers will better understand disabilities and how amazing and capable children who have them are.
We will try to consider age and gender when assigning buddies as much as possible, but it depends on availability. If your child prefers to type, then emails can be sent. If your child prefers to handwrite his or her letters, you can simply take a picture of the letter and send the picture in the email. Drawings are also encouraged along with writing! When you join using our sign up form, you will receive a welcome email that further explains our process. Thank you, and we look forward to getting to know you!
